UK Sofa Sale & Price Claims Tracker — July 2026

Benny the Cushion has been marked down, marked back up, and had a "Was £1,899 / Now £999" swing tag knotted to his zip more times than he'd like to admit. So when ProperSofa started recording UK sofa prices on a fixed schedule, he insisted we publish exactly what the numbers say — no more, no less. This is the first read.
What this is (and what it isn't — read this first)
On 6 July 2026 we recorded the publicly advertised details of 313 sofa listings across 47 UK retailers: the price on the day, the crossed-out "was" price where one was shown, and the name of any sale or event running on the retailer's own site at that moment. The full, machine-readable record is open data — free to cite (see the press block at the end).
This is a single-date baseline snapshot, not yet a time-series. As of this report there is one observation date in the dataset (2026-07-06). That means we can tell you, with confidence, how deep the discounts were and how the "was/now" claims were structured on that day. We cannot yet tell you how often a given sale price recurs, whether a "was" price is genuine, or how prices move week to week — because we have not yet recorded a second week. Any claim of that kind is explicitly withheld below rather than guessed. Future editions of this tracker (one sweep per week) will unlock those questions; this one establishes the baseline.
We say "observed on N of M checks", never "fake" or "scam". Where a retailer's own site made a claim ambiguous, we excluded it rather than characterise it.
Headline numbers (all from the 6 July 2026 sweep)
- 47 retailers, 313 sofa listings recorded on one date.
- 180 of 313 listings (58%) carried a crossed-out "was" price alongside the selling price. The other 133 (42%) were shown at a flat price with no reference "was" figure.
- 41 of 47 retailers (87%) were running a named sale or promotional event on that single day — "Summer Sale", "Summer Savings", "End of Season Sale", "Apulian Sale", and so on.
- Only 6 of 47 retailers showed no named sitewide sale event at all.
- Advertised prices in the sample ran from £46.99 to £13,450, with a median advertised price of £1,995.
The single most striking baseline fact: on an ordinary Monday in early July — not Black Friday, not the January sales — the overwhelming majority of tracked UK sofa retailers were already advertising a "sale".
How deep were the discounts?
For the 171 listings with a usable "was" price (we excluded one retailer's figures entirely — see the caveat below), the implied discount from "was" to selling price was:
- Median discount: 20%. Mean: 22%.
- Range: 5% to 60%.

Read plainly: the typical "was/now" saving observed was around a fifth off, not half off. Discounts of 40% or deeper appeared on only 16 of 171 listings (9%), and 50%-or-deeper on just 6. The "up to 50% off" language that several banners used (see below) was, on this date, reached by a small minority of the actual listings behind it — which is exactly what "up to" permits, and worth citing precisely rather than dramatising.
The "up to X%" gap
Several retailers advertised headline figures like "up to 50% off" while the listings we actually recorded from them sat well below that ceiling. On the 6 July sweep:
- King Living — banner "SAVE UP TO 50%"; the 5 listings we recorded ran 36–54% off (median 50%). Here the headline was broadly borne out.
- Nick Scali — banner "Up to 50% off"; 8 listings recorded at 30–41% off (median 37%). The deepest we saw was 41%, below the 50% ceiling.
- Barker and Stonehouse — banner "Up to 25% off"; 7 listings at 16–23% (median 19%).
- Sofology — 4 usable "was/now" listings at 5–18% off (median 10%), against a "launch price / after-launch price" framing.
This is a factual observation about the distance between a headline ceiling and the recorded listings on one date, stated per-retailer. It is not an accusation — "up to" is a legitimate and common construction. We simply record where the recorded listings actually landed.
Discount depth by retailer (6 July 2026)
Retailers in our sample with two or more usable "was/now" listings, sorted by the deepest single discount observed. n = number of listings recorded for that retailer on the date.

Two patterns are visible even in a single week's data, and both are simply described, not judged:
- Premium and design-led names showed the widest recorded ranges (West Elm 30–60%, King Living 36–54%, Conran 20–50%) — consistent with clearance/end-of-line markdowns sitting next to full-price ranges.
- The volume high-street names clustered at the shallower end on this date — DFS (median 11%), SCS (13%), Sofology (10%) — with several listings in single-digit percentages.
We are not yet asserting these are permanent or recurring patterns. One week cannot establish "always". The weekly cadence is designed precisely to test whether these medians hold, drift, or reset.
Sale-event language on a single ordinary date
Of the 41 retailers running a named event on 6 July 2026, 20 published no end date for that event on the pages we recorded — the sale was "on now" with no stated finish. A further 18 cited a concrete date or window (e.g. BoConcept "valid 19 June to 3 August 2026"; The Conran Shop "Ends Midnight 14th July"; The Chesterfield Company "LIMITED TIME ONLY … ends 13th July").
Verbatim examples of the "no published end date" pattern, recorded exactly as shown:
- Arlo & Jacob — "MADE BY US – 15% OFF — no end date shown".
- Heal's — "The Heal's Sale — 'Sale is now on', up to 30% off sofas (end date not stated)".
- Nick Scali — "Sofa Sale | Up to 50% off (no end date shown)".
- SofaSofa — "30% OFF SUMMER SAVINGS NOW ON (no end date shown)".
- Andrew Martin — "Sale (evergreen /sale section)".
This is a description of how the promotion was framed on one date. Whether any of these events is genuinely time-limited is exactly the kind of question only repeat observation can answer — and it is the reason we are running this as a weekly tracker rather than a one-off. Watch this space; we are not pre-judging it.
What we deliberately did NOT claim (and why)
Being explicit about the limits is what makes the numbers above trustworthy. We dropped the following:
- "How often a sale price recurs" / sale cadence. Requires ≥2 observation dates. We have 1. Dropped.
- "Is the 'was' price genuine?" / whether any discount is real. This needs the selling price tracked across multiple weeks to see whether the "was" price is ever actually charged. We have a single week. We make no claim that any specific "was" price is inflated, fictional, or misleading. Dropped.
- Week-on-week price movement, by brand or tier. No second week exists yet. Dropped.
- Kingcome Sofas discount figures — excluded entirely. That retailer's Shopify listings displayed a "Regular price" lower than the "Sale price" on several items (inverted vs normal convention), which our sweep note flagged as unverified and explicitly instructed us not to publish. We therefore removed all 9 of Kingcome's "was/now" listings from every discount statistic above. Their flat prices remain in the raw dataset for transparency, but contribute to no discount claim. Excluded.
- Whole-market averages. 47 retailers is a real sample but not the whole UK market, and it over-represents premium/independent names relative to the mass market. We report what we observed, never "the average UK sofa".
- Any characterisation of a retailer as deceptive. We record structure and depth; we do not label intent.
Methodology
- What we record: for each tracked product listing — the advertised selling price, the crossed-out "was"/reference price if one is displayed, the named sale event shown on the retailer's own site, the source URL, and the observation date.
- When: a fixed weekly schedule. This edition reflects the sweep dated 6 July 2026 — currently the only date in the dataset. Future editions add one date per week.
- Sample: 313 listings across 47 UK sofa retailers, spanning budget (from £46.99) to premium (to £13,450), median advertised £1,995.
- Discount %: computed as
(was − now) / was, rounded, only where both figures were displayed. 180 of 313 listings carried a "was" price; after excluding the one retailer flagged as unverified, 171 discounts underpin the depth statistics. - Exclusions: listings where price direction was ambiguous or a sweep note flagged the "was" figure as unverified were excluded from discount stats (see caveat 4).
- What we don't do: we do not scrape behind logins, do not infer prices, and do not fill gaps with estimates. A blank stays blank.
- Corrections: because every figure carries its source URL and date, any retailer can check our record against their own site. We correct verifiable errors.

For press: cite this
UK sofa retailers were advertising a "sale" on an ordinary July Monday, but the typical saving was around 20% — not the "up to 50%" of the banners. On 6 July 2026, ProperSofa recorded 313 sofa listings across 47 UK retailers: 41 of the 47 (87%) were running a named sale event, yet across 171 listings with a crossed-out "was" price, the median implied discount was 20% and only 6 listings reached 50% or more off.
