Frequently Asked Questions

Benny answers the questions every sofa buyer eventually asks. The honest version.

What's the best sofa brand in the UK?+
There isn't one "best" — it depends on your budget, style, and whether you value a showroom visit. For premium craftsmanship, Maker&Son and Kingcome Sofas are hard to beat. For mid-range value, Loaf and Sofas & Stuff offer excellent customisation. On a budget, Swyft and IKEA deliver solid modular options. Benny rates every brand on the brands page — compare them side by side on the compare tool.
How much should I spend on a sofa?+
A sofa you'll keep for 10+ years typically costs between £1,000 and £2,500. Below £800, you're usually compromising on frame quality or cushion longevity. Above £3,000, you're paying for materials, craftsmanship, or a brand name — which can be worth it if you value those things. The key is cost per year of use, not sticker price. Read more in our UK Sofa Buying Guide.
What's the most durable sofa fabric?+
Look for fabrics rated above 25,000 on the Martindale rub test — that's the industry standard for durability. Performance fabrics (stain-resistant, washable) from brands like Sofology are excellent for families. Leather ages gracefully and is easy to clean. Velvet looks stunning but shows wear faster. Linen creases beautifully but isn't pet-proof. Our fabric guide covers every option in detail.
Is it worth buying a sofa online without trying it?+
It depends on the brand. Swyft, Loaf, and Swoon all offer generous return policies specifically because they know you can't sit on it first. If you're spending over £1,500, Benny strongly recommends visiting a showroom — comfort is deeply personal. Use our city pages to find showrooms near you.
What's the difference between a corner sofa and an L-shaped sofa?+
They're the same thing — "corner sofa" is the UK term, "L-shaped" describes the configuration. The real decision is left-hand vs right-hand facing (which end has the chaise), and whether to go fixed or modular. Modular lets you reconfigure later, which is useful if you move house. See our corner sofa buying guide for the full breakdown.
How long should a good sofa last?+
A well-made sofa with a hardwood frame should last 15-20 years. Cushions typically need attention at 7-10 years — either refluffing, re-foaming, or replacement. Budget sofas with chipboard frames and stapled joints often sag within 3-5 years. The warranty period is a good indicator: brands confident in their build offer 10+ year frame guarantees.
What does white-glove delivery mean?+
White-glove delivery means the delivery team carries the sofa into your room of choice, unpacks it, assembles it if needed, and removes all packaging. It's the standard for premium brands like Natuzzi and Ligne Roset. Budget brands often offer "doorstep delivery" only, where they leave it at your front door. Always check what's included before ordering.
Is sofa finance a good idea?+
0% interest finance can be sensible if you'd otherwise buy a cheaper sofa you'd replace sooner. But BNPL schemes and deferred payment deals carry real risks — missed payments damage your credit score, and the "interest-free" period has a definite end date. Always read the APR that kicks in after the interest-free period expires. Our sofa finance guide explains the details.
How do I measure for a new sofa?+
Measure the room space (not just the wall), all doorways the sofa must pass through, any stairways or tight turns, and leave at least 45cm of walkway around the sofa. The number one delivery failure reason is a sofa that physically won't fit through the door. Measure twice. Then measure again. Some brands offer a free home measuring service — ask before you order.
What is Martindale rub count?+
The Martindale test measures fabric durability by rubbing it mechanically until it shows wear. The number tells you how many rubs (called "cycles") the fabric survived. Under 15,000 is light domestic use only. 20,000-30,000 is standard for everyday home use. Over 40,000 is commercial-grade and essentially indestructible for home use. Our fabric guide has a full durability table.
Can I visit sofa showrooms without an appointment?+
Most high-street showrooms (DFS, Sofology, Furniture Village) welcome walk-ins. Smaller independent brands and premium showrooms sometimes require appointments — especially George Smith and Ligne Roset flagship stores. Check the brand's website or call ahead. Use our city directory to plan your showroom visits.
What's the best sofa for pets?+
Look for performance fabrics or tight-weave materials that don't snag on claws — avoid velvet and loose-weave linen. Leather is excellent for pets (wipe-clean, no hair embedding) but can scratch. Removable, washable covers are the gold standard for pet owners — Swyft and IKEA both offer this. Dark colours and patterned fabrics also hide hair better than plain light fabrics.
