Benny's Showroom Visit Cheat Sheet: 20 Checks Before You Buy

This checklist is the antidote — twenty things to actually check while you're there, so the sofa that comes home is as good as the one you sat on. Print this page, fold it into your pocket, and work through it while nobody's watching.

Before You Leave Home

1. Measure your access, not just your room. Front door width, hallway turns, stair pinch points, internal door frames. Write the narrowest measurement on this sheet. More sofas are returned for not fitting through doors than for any other reason.

2. Know your maximum sofa footprint. Masking-tape the outline on your floor and live with it for a day. A sofa that looks modest in a 10,000 sq ft showroom will loom in a normal lounge.

3. Set your real budget — including delivery, protection and disposal. Add £50–£150 for delivery (unless it's genuinely free), and ask what removing your old sofa costs. The ticket price is rarely the door price.

4. Check the brand's returns and warranty policy online first. You'll negotiate better knowing whether "20-year guarantee" means the frame only (it usually does) and whether made-to-order means no change-of-mind returns (it usually does).

The Frame (Checks 5–8)

5. Lift one end of the sofa. A quality hardwood frame has real weight to it. If you can lift the end with one hand, be suspicious of the frame material.

6. Ask what the frame is actually made of. "Hardwood" should mean beech or birch, kiln-dried. "Engineered wood" means chipboard or MDF — fine at budget prices, not at £1,500+.

7. Ask how the joints are made. The answer you want: glued, screwed AND dowelled (or corner-blocked). The answer you don't: staples alone.

8. Push down hard on the arms and lean on the backrest. Any creak, flex or wobble in a brand-new showroom model will only get worse after a year of real use.

The Sit Test (Checks 9–12)

9. Sit for ten minutes minimum — not thirty seconds. Sit how you actually sit at home: legs up, slouched sideways, phone in hand. The polite upright showroom sit tells you nothing.

10. Listen when you sit down and stand up. Springs shouldn't twang, frames shouldn't click, and you shouldn't feel the frame through the seat cushion at any point.

11. Check the seat depth against your actual legs. Feet flat on floor, back against the backrest: if your knees hang short or the edge cuts mid-thigh, that's daily discomfort you're auditioning.

12. Everyone who'll use the sofa should sit on it. A sofa that suits a 6'2" partner and a 5'2" partner is rarer than you'd think. Bring the household.

Cushions and Fabric (Checks 13–16)

13. Ask what's inside the seat cushions. Foam = holds shape, firmer. Fibre = softer, needs daily plumping and flattens within two years. Feather-wrapped foam = the usual best compromise. Duck feather alone = high maintenance.

14. Unzip a seat cushion if they'll let you. (Good showrooms will.) You're looking for a sealed foam core with a wrap — not loose crumb fill that will migrate and lump.

15. Ask for the fabric's rub count (Martindale). 15,000+ for general domestic use, 25,000+ for a family sofa, 40,000+ if you have kids, pets, or strong opinions about longevity.

16. Do the flat-hand test on the fabric. Rub firmly in both directions: pilling, colour transfer, or visible weave distortion in the showroom means the same at home within months.

The Money Part (Checks 17–20)

17. Ignore the crossed-out price. Sofa retail runs near-perpetual "sales" — some discounts have been running since the Boer War. Compare the actual price against 2–3 rivals on your phone, from the showroom floor.

18. Ask what the warranty actually covers, and get it in writing. Frame? Springs? Cushion collapse? Fabric? The gap between "20-year guarantee" (frame only) and what fails first (cushions and fabric) is where disappointment lives.

19. Ask the delivery lead time for YOUR configuration — and what happens if it slips. "8–10 weeks" on made-to-order regularly becomes 14. Ask about compensation or cancellation rights if it does.

20. If you're using finance, read the total, not the monthly. 0% APR over 48 months is genuinely useful; anything above 0% on a sofa deserves a hard look at the total cost against just waiting one more paycheque.


The Walk-Away Rules

  • More than 3 failed checks → walk. No single sofa is worth ignoring its own warning signs.
  • "This price is today only" → walk. It will be the same price next weekend. Pressure is a substitute for value.
  • They won't tell you what's in the frame or cushions → walk. Brands proud of their construction can't stop talking about it.
