“Right, let's be straight with each other about money. Some links on here earn us a bit. None of them buy a better rating.”
The short version
Some of the links on ProperSofa are affiliate links. If you click one and then buy something, the retailer pays us a small commission. It costs you nothing extra — the price is exactly the same as if you'd gone to them directly. That's the whole deal. Now here's the longer version, because you deserve the detail.
What an affiliate link actually is
An affiliate link is just a normal link to a shop with a little tag on the end that tells them “Benny sent this person.” If you go on to buy a sofa within a set window, the shop shares a slice of that sale with us as a thank-you for the referral.
We work with affiliate networks including Awin and FlexOffers, and through them with retailers such as Wayfair UK and Sofas & Stuff. We may add others over time, and they'll all be covered by this same promise.
The promise that actually matters
This is the bit Benny cares about most:
- •Commission never changes a rating. A brand cannot pay, sponsor, or commission its way to more cushions. The ratings are built from the same research evidence whether a brand has an affiliate programme or not.
- •It costs you nothing. Affiliate links never raise the price you pay. Same sofa, same price, same checkout.
- •We'd still recommend the same sofas without it. If a brand we rate poorly happens to have the fattest commission, we still rate it poorly. If our favourite has no affiliate programme at all, it's still our favourite.
- •We label the links. Wherever there's an affiliate link, you'll see a plain note next to it. No hiding it in the small print.
How you'll spot an affiliate link
Near any affiliate link you'll find a short line like this:
“Heads up from Benny: the link below is an affiliate link — if you buy through it, ProperSofa may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes a single cushion on our ratings.”
Behind the scenes those links are tagged so search engines know they're commercial (technically: rel="sponsored"). That's us playing by the rules, not a trick.
Why we do it
Researching 53 brands and 906 showrooms, keeping the data fresh, and writing honest comparison guides takes real time and money. Affiliate commission — alongside the odd advert — is what lets ProperSofa stay free for you to use and independent of any single sofa brand.
We'd rather earn a small, transparent cut when we genuinely helped you find the right sofa than take a brand's money to say nice things. Those are very different businesses, and we're firmly the first kind.
Our legal bit (kept human)
This disclosure exists because it's the right thing to do and because consumer-protection rules require it — in the UK under the CMA / ASA advertising codes and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, and in the US under the FTC's endorsement guidelines. All of them say the same sensible thing: if a link can earn us money, we have to tell you clearly and up front. So we do.
ProperSofa is an independent publisher. We are not owned by, employed by, or acting on behalf of any sofa retailer. Our affiliate relationships are referral arrangements only — they give us no say over, and no stake in, what any brand sells or charges.
